From A Little Brother's Perspective

I still remember my sister, Obia Ewah (CEO/Founder), harassing me with endless plastic Tupperware jars filled with only God knows what...

"Try this!"

"Put this in your hair and tell me what you think."

"Omini look! I made it myself..."

It was 2010 or thereabout, and Obia had just returned from a semester in medical school. Needless to say, I was NOT interested in her concoctions, or her incessant chattering about "going" and "being natural". You see, I was used to my sister being a "science nerd" and having an infatuation over something she created or dissected. As far back as I can remember there would be some animal's heart or brain in a Ziploc bag hidden in our freezer awaiting dissection and inspection for an upcoming "Show and Tell" day. So Obia creating and testing and sharing her new creation, natural hair care products, did not come as a surprise to me; I simply believed it was another phase, and in a few months or years, it would pass. I could not have been further from the truth.

I graduated with my baccalaureate degree in Nursing in May 2011, and had grand dreams of becoming a songwriter, entrepreneur, and spoken-word poet; I had it all figured out! But as the months went by and the stresses of being a hospital floor nurse began to take its toll on me and my health, and no more than a handful of people were checking for my incredible songs, I asked God for a sign, for a change, for an opportunity. I then realized that Obia’s little experiment, was no experiment at all; and if she was to succeed, I needed to step in and step up. June 2012, OBIA Natural Hair Care (O.B.I. Natural Hair Care, at the time) left the train station, and we’ve been picking up steam and speed ever since.

In the past two years I have watched my sister transform from an ambiguous but ambitious student, into a powerful woman, an inspiration to more as each day passes. I’m blessed to have the access and perspective that future books and films will be derived from, and that, for me, is the primary motivation of this blog. To document. To share this incredible journey with you. It means the world to us that so many people have been positively affected by the work that we've put forth with love and gratitude, and each day we are humbled by the emails, phone calls, and social media messages we receive from our beloved clients. Throughout this process I have developed and sustained an incredible bond with my sister. She’s everything to me, and I would do anything for her to support and ensure all dreams are achieved. WE share this dream now!

For myself, I have discovered new heights and new depths through this process. I have developed a passion for filmmaking, and I am working on several projects including an OBIA Natural Hair Care documentary. I’m still able to do the things I love and want to do, just with a refreshing new twist and purpose. Owning and running a company is no cakewalk, and Obia and I have had to endure things that the majority of the world will never know, but to say “it’s worth it” would be a criminal-understatement. I thank God each and every day for this blessing, this opportunity. WE DREAM BIG! We are so excited to share with you new products, our new website (do you like?!), new promotions, and new collaborations!

We ask that you stay tuned-in, as both Obia and I will regularly post to this blog, and we promise to always keep this section of the website personal, just you and us! Thank you! We can never say that enough…
